Dogsploitation and false advertising

When I watched Watchmen a few weeks ago I spent the entire Rorschach/Dog killing scene with my eyes closed and was accused by a friend of wimpiness*. While this is possibly true, I had much less difficulty with watching human beings face gory deaths than seeing the animals die.

I am one of those people for whose sake the family pet will always mysteriously survive a movie. I cannot watch pets die. I really really cannot watch dogs die.

Which is one of the reasons I never read John Grogan's Marley & Me when it came out. A labrador story where the dog died at the end was pretty much guaranteed to leave me completely gutted. I learned my lesson when I stupidly decided to read The Last Family in England on a plane.

For the last few days, every time I visit the I has a hotdog site (Every half hour or so. These are dark times; paper submissions loom and I need all the happiness I can get) I see adverts telling me that the movie has come out on dvd.

They're calling it a comedy.

The dog dies!

* As in, easily scared. She was not (I think) accusing me of being this guy.

The fact that they didn't have him killing the dogs as the turning point of that character (opting for the ridiculous cleaver-to-the-head porn instead) is one of the main things I disliked about the adaptation.

On the other hand, if they had him killing the dogs in same stupid way as the guy then that would have been worse...

And I knew just enough about Marley & Me that when my dad looked at the poster and asked me what it was about, I promptly replied, "It's about a dog that dies."

Of course, had the dog lived I probably would have said the same thing, in order to avoid going to see a Jennifer Aniston movie.

I definitely am a wimp when it comes to movies. I completely, utterly refuse to watch a movie that could very loosely be classified as horror (or if it has "gruesome scenes"). So, yes, I do get easily scared, whether it's dogs dying, or humans. Even though I'm not very fond of dogs.

(The exception is Lord Of the Rings.. for some reason, I take a sadistic joy in watching the Orcs die)

Same here-during that scene I just closed my eyes and got cross with my other half for taking me to see the film. And I knew I would howl during Marley-because it has a lab that dies. Went for it after much persuasion and sure enough...humans dying is ok. Dogs, especially labs, no way.

Vishal - Agreed on the idiocy of the man-killing. The dogs are much more powerful.

Sumedha - I'm not that much of a wimp where gore is concerned. Animal-torture, though, is one place where I draw the line.

Ra - Yeah, you're a lab-person, aren't you? Lab-pain is the hardest thing of all for me; I'm not sure if it's because I've lived with and loved one or because they're just inherently the sort of creature you need to protect from pain.
I flip past the dog killing in Watchmen whenever I read it. Luckily I knew where it was coming in the movie and closed my eyes beforehand.

I refused to read Watchmen after watching the film thereby upsetting my husband and sister...who really love the graphic novel.

As for labs...they protect you from pain also..no? Yes lab pain is impossible to get over. Can't wait for the day I live in a house that can have a lab in it.
