Stuff like this makes me wonder about the media in this country.
I mean, I've always assumed when I saw low-grade reporting like this that people really wanted to know. That there was this huge, homogenous body, 'the people' who honestly wanted to know that the De family read the TOI with their morning cup of tea. And while I thought it would be nice if 'the people' were given some information that would actually benefit/educate them, (No, that is not snobbish. Thinking that the news is more important than page three is not elitist) I realised that newspapers were a business, that you gave people what they wanted, and that occasionally, you made them want something because you could provide it easily.
Yesterday, though. Does the TOI honestly believe that people whose lives have been seriously disrupted, whose property has been ruined/lost, or who may even have lost a loved one want to read about people on whom the only effect the rain had was to delay their reading of the paper? Apparently. And however much we condemn it, there are people who are going to see nothing wrong with it. Because this is the kind of reporting they're used to.
Yes, the HT supplements are just as insensitive. Don't know about The Hindu, my grandfather grabs it before I can get to it. It's not the TOI. it's mos of the media.
I normally laugh at things like this. But people are dead, and I have a feeling that only a small minority of TOI readers are going to even notice that something's wrong. Yes, Uma's blog entry has more than 50 comments, but what about the other 'seven lakh readers'?

Exactly my feelings. Something this bizarre would usually make me laugh. But this is just sick.
And you're right, most people don't even know about this.
we did notice it in our hostel..and all of us felt miserable. we almost came close to stoppping our toi subscription, but then.. 'the people' wanted it. i've always liked ie a lot better.
Ppl already know that the ToI is garbage. Am wondering why you even took the trouble to direct ppl to their idiocy.
I read the Hindu.
Just me - um. What can I say, maybe some people aren't as enlightened as you? I don't read the ToI either, by the way. Perhaps some people do NOT know that the ToI don't deserve their money. Perhaps (gasp) I don't write here to make a huge difference to the world in general., but just to talk.
It's really ridiculous on part of TOI. They are loosing the sense of responsibility and freedom. More or less newspaper is focusing on sex and bollywood than social issues which were never limelight for them.
I fully agree. I changed my paper to DNA after eading TOI for last 17 years. Read here why: http://mumbaijamming.blogspot.com/2005/12/why-i-changed-my-newspaper.html
